AI CCTV and Video Analytics: Better Security While Respecting Privacy and GDPR
AI video analytics can turn CCTV from passive recording into proactive security. Here is how to deploy it effectively and in line with privacy law.
Traditional CCTV records hours of footage that nobody watches until after an incident. AI video analytics changes that by detecting relevant events in real time and alerting the right people, making security teams far more effective.
What AI video analytics can do
- Intrusion and perimeter detection that distinguishes people and vehicles from animals or moving branches.
- Loitering and abandoned-object alerts in sensitive areas.
- Vehicle and licence-plate recognition for car parks and access gates.
- People counting and occupancy monitoring for retail and facilities management.
- Smart search that finds footage by attributes such as colour or object type in seconds.
Choosing the right system
Decide whether analytics should run on the cameras (edge), on an on-site server or in the cloud. Edge analytics reduces bandwidth and works during network outages; central processing makes it easier to update models and manage many sites. Look for open standards such as ONVIF, strong encryption, regular firmware updates and a supplier with a clear vulnerability-disclosure process.
Privacy and GDPR compliance
In the UK and EU, CCTV that captures identifiable people processes personal data under the GDPR (and the UK GDPR). Good practice includes:
- A clear purpose: document why cameras are needed and avoid recording more than necessary.
- A Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA): required for many large-scale or high-risk deployments, and strongly advisable for biometric features such as facial recognition.
- Signage: tell people that recording is taking place and who to contact.
- Retention limits: keep footage only as long as needed, then delete it automatically.
- Access control: restrict who can view and export footage, and log every access.
- Subject access requests: have a process to provide or redact footage when requested.
Facial recognition is subject to particularly strict rules and scrutiny. Seek legal advice before deploying it.
Cyber security matters too
Cameras are network devices. Change default passwords, segment the CCTV network from business systems, keep firmware updated and disable unused services.
Frequently asked questions
Can we use AI analytics with existing cameras?
Often, yes. Many analytics platforms work with existing IP cameras, though image quality and positioning affect accuracy.
How long should we keep CCTV footage?
There is no single legal period. Many organisations keep footage for around 30 days unless it is needed for an investigation, but the right period depends on your documented purpose.
